Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system uses a selective emitter to convert heat to radiative energy from a heat source to photovoltaic (PV) cell. In the system, selective emitter has important role to selectively emit photons to PV cell above the bandgap region. By controlling radiative selectivity of the emitter, TPV system can have high conversion efficiency (theoretically up to ~35%). It also has benefits of no moving parts, compact system, and is adjustable to various heat sources.
MEL have conducted both lab-scale and large scale TPV experiment, in order to investigate the effect of selective emitter to conversion efficiency of the TPV system.
